0.0 Begin at a trailhead at the first turn on the asphalt park road that leads to backpacker and overflow parking, 270 feet from Entrance Road (GPS: 35.776712 N /-106.269512 W).

0.06 Reach the junction of the Falls Trail and a trail that parallels the overflow parking road at an information kiosk (GPS: 35.775885 N /-106.269274 W). Hike southeast on a bench above Frijoles Creek.

0.9 Cross Frijoles Creek on a plank bridge and continue hiking southeast down the canyon on the left side of the creek.

1.1 Cross Frijoles Creek on another plank bridge (GPS: 35.765808 N /-106.261122 W) and follow the trail on the right bank of the creek.

1.4 Reach an exposed trail section above the deep canyon below.

1.5 Reach an unfenced viewpoint for Upper Frijoles Falls (GPS: 35.762656 N /-106.259794 W). The trail beyond here to the Rio Grande is closed. Return to the trailhead on the same route.

3.0 Arrive back at the trailhead.
